INFORMATION FOR PARENTS & CAREGIVERS

Asthma is one of the most common chronic (long-term) diseases in children. It is also one of the main causes for missed school days.
As a parent or caregiver of a child with asthma, take the proper precautions to protect your child’s health:
- Make an Asthma Action Plan with your child’s pediatrician and be sure to update this plan every year;
- Share this plan with family, childcare personnel, school officials, and coaches;
- Become aware of what triggers your child’s asthma and help limit your child’s exposure to these triggers;
- Never smoke or vape around your child or in a car with your child. In Hawai‘i, smoking & vaping are illegal in any motor vehicle when a minor is present. Violators will be fined;
- Educate yourself with the American Lung Association’s Asthma Basics program (free online course) and complimentary resources.
