Jump to recipeThis homemade recipe is a healthy alternative to using Butter, Apple Sauce or Apple Butter!
Notes
Using a pressure cooker instead of a stock pot will yield quicker and better results, however you will need to determine how long to cook the apples for the best consistency. Apple Butter can be refrigerated for up to 2 weeks. Freezing will make the Apple Butter consistency watery. If you desire an unsweetened Apple Butter, omit the Dark Brown Sugar. For best results in baking, you can substitute for up to 1 cup of Oil with 1 cup of Apple Butter.
Ingredients
- 4 lbs Granny Smith Apples, peeled, seeded and sliced (or any other sweet tart apple variety)
- 1/3 cup 100% Apple Juice (not from concentrate)
- 2/3 cup Dark Brown Sugar
- 2 tsp Vanilla Extract
- 1 tsp Fresh Lemon Juice
- 1 tsp Cinnamon
- 1 tsp Nutmeg
- 1/2 tsp Ground Ginger
Instructions
- Place all the ingredients into a large stock pot with a tight lid.
- Bring pot to a boil over medium high heat.
- Once pot begins to boil, reduce heat to a medium low heat.
- After approximately 15-25 minutes, apple chunks should be soft enough to mash with a spoon.
- Remove the apple mixture from heat and into a large bowl.
- Puree mixture with an immersion blender until smooth. Be careful to not over blend the mixture to prevent it from being watery. (A blender or food processor may be used with but in short spurts to keep mixture thick and smooth.)
